About First Presbyterian Church of Bristol

Values

Our church chooses to emphasize its shared unity of faith in Jesus Christ, as he is attested in Scripture, over all other values, identities, theological systems, and markers of belonging (See 1 Corinthians 2:2).

 Beliefs

  • There is only one God, “Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Eph. 4:6) who is the Creator of the universe. God exists eternally in three Persons – the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • Holy Scripture is the written Word of God, all given by inspiration of God, to be the rule of faith and life. Its authority, by which it is believed and obeyed, depends wholly upon God. (See Westminster Confession of Faith, I.1.2 &4)

  • God created human beings together, both male and female, to bear His image. As such, each person is worthy of love, dignity, and respect regardless of matters like age, race, gender, or class. However, human beings are also fallen through their sin and disobedience, making us slaves to the twin powers of sin and death. Therefore, all human beings need a Redeemer. Only by the grace of God through Jesus Christ can they experience salvation.

  • Jesus is both fully God and fully human, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the Cross as a substitute for mankind, was raised from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will one day return. In short, he did for us what we could not do so that we might be like him (1 John 3:1-3). Therefore, salvation comes only through Jesus Christ, the only mediator between God and man. No other religion, belief, or person can reconcile God and man. He alone can provide forgiveness and eternal salvation.

  • Our rescue from the powers of sin and death was secured by the Lord Jesus. Therefore, it comes only through a relationship of trust in and love with Jesus Christ, the Savior. We experience this when we repent of our sins, receive the Good News of his forgiveness and eternal life (Mark 1:15). We encounter this call to repentance and belief by the work of the Holy Spirit when it is proclaimed, heard, and received. This salvation is wholly of God by grace on the basis of Christ’s life, death and resurrection, not on the basis of human works. All the redeemed are secured in Christ forever.

  • The Holy Spirit immediately places all people who put their faith in Jesus Christ into one united spiritual body, the Church, of which Christ is the head (Romans 12:4-5). Thus, the life of faith is not a solitary matter, but is a “team sport” wherein we, the body, grow together in Christ, to the glory of God’s name (2 Corinthians 4:13-15).

  • God in Christ has promised to make all things new (Revelation 21:5). Though we do not know what this renewal and recreation will look like, precisely, it will be to God’s glory, reflected in Christ (1 John 3:2), and will redeem the goodness already present in the creation God declared as “very good” from its founding (Genesis 1:31). At that time, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the earth. Christ will judge both the saved and unsaved. Those who have trusted Christ will be transformed, receive a glorified body, and dwell forever with the Lord. Those whom Christ does not know will be cast into outer darkness, a place of eternal separation from God, our very life.
